Do you need a voltage stabiliser

Whether your AC, fridge or washing machine needs a stabiliser depends on two things: your supply and the appliance's own voltage range.

Does my AC or fridge need a voltage stabiliser?

Many newer ACs and fridges, especially inverter models, are built to run across a wide voltage range, which is printed on the spec sheet or in the manual, so on a steady supply they may not need a stabiliser. If your voltage often drops or swings, lights dim when a motor starts, or the manual asks for one, a stabiliser rated for that appliance is cheap protection. Check the appliance's rated range first, then match the stabiliser to it.

What a stabiliser does

Home supply in India is nominally 230 volts, but it can sag in the evening or rise at night. A stabiliser keeps its output close to the normal voltage when the input goes up or down, and cuts off the appliance if the input goes too far.

Many stabilisers made for ACs and fridges also have a time delay. After a power cut, they wait a few minutes before switching on, which protects the compressor from restarting too soon.

Signs your supply is poor

  • Lights dim or flicker when the AC, fridge or pump starts
  • Fans slow down in the evening
  • The AC trips or restarts often for no clear reason
  • Neighbours have had boards or compressors fail after power cuts
  • You are at the end of a long line or a busy transformer

How to choose one

  • Read the working voltage range of the appliance on its spec sheet or label
  • Pick a stabiliser made for that appliance type and size, such as a 1.5 ton AC or a fridge of your capacity
  • Its working range should cover the low voltages you actually see
  • Prefer one with a time delay for compressors
  • Use one stabiliser per AC, and do not plug other loads into it
  • Fix loose sockets and old wiring too, because no stabiliser makes up for a burnt plug

When to call us

If an AC or fridge stops after a voltage drop or a power cut, the fault is often in the board, the capacitor or the compressor relay. A technician can find it and tell you the repair cost before any work. See inverter AC repair or AC repair.

Questions

Does an inverter AC need a stabiliser?

Often not, if your supply stays inside the range given on its spec sheet. In areas with frequent low voltage, a stabiliser made for inverter ACs is still worth having.

Does a washing machine need a stabiliser?

Fully automatic machines have electronic boards. On a poor supply, a stabiliser suited to the machine protects them. On a steady supply, most do not need one.

Is a stabiliser the same as a home inverter or UPS?

No. A home inverter or UPS gives backup power during a cut. A stabiliser corrects the voltage while the mains supply is on. They do different jobs.
