Why does my convection microwave heat in microwave mode but not bake?
Convection mode uses a separate heating element and fan, controlled by a temperature sensor, so it can fail on its own while microwave mode still works. The usual causes are a burnt heater, a failed convection fan motor, a faulty temperature sensor, or a relay on the control board. A technician tests each part with a meter.

How a convection microwave works
It is three ovens in one. Microwave mode heats food from inside using the magnetron. Grill mode uses a heater at the top to brown food. Convection mode uses a heater and a fan to blow hot air round the cavity, like a small baking oven. Combination modes run two of these together.
Because each mode uses different parts, telling us which mode fails, and which still works, helps the technician find the fault.

What you can safely check first
- Check you chose convection, not microwave or grill, and let it finish preheating
- Use the metal rack and tins only in the modes your manual allows. Metal in microwave mode can spark
- Leave space round the oven as the manual says. Blocked vents make it overheat and cut out
- Clean grease off the walls and the heater area once it is cool. Burning grease smokes
- Do not remove the cover. The high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a dangerous charge even when the oven is unplugged

Questions
Why is there smoke or a burning smell in convection mode?
Usually grease or food on the walls or near the heater burning off. Clean the cavity when it is cool. If the smoke comes from the vents or the back, or it smells electrical, switch off at the socket and book a check.
Can the convection heater be replaced on its own?
Yes, on most models. The heater, the fan motor and the sensor are separate parts, so only the failed one is changed.
Do you repair built-in ovens?
Tell us the brand and model when you book. The technician will say if it can be repaired in place.
