Why is my microwave running but not heating?

If the light, fan and plate work but food stays cold, the fault is usually in the high-voltage circuit: the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the high-voltage capacitor or a fuse. A faulty door switch can also blow the fuse. These parts carry dangerous voltage, so only a technician should test them.

Do not open the microwave yourself

A microwave makes several thousand volts inside to power the magnetron. The high-voltage capacitor stores part of that charge and can hold it even after the plug is pulled out, sometimes for a long time. A shock from it can kill.

So please do not remove the outer cover, even with the oven unplugged. Our technician discharges the capacitor safely before touching any part inside.

What you can safely check first

  • Make sure it is set to microwave mode, not grill only, and that the power level is not set very low
  • Heat a microwave-safe cup of water for one minute. It should come out clearly warm
  • Check that the door closes fully and clicks shut. Wipe food off the door edge
  • Check the plug and socket with another appliance
  • Some models have a demo mode where the display and plate work but nothing heats. Your manual explains how to switch it off
  • Do not run the oven empty to test it. Running with nothing inside can damage the magnetron

Common causes

  • Magnetron worn out or failed. This is the part that makes the microwaves
  • High-voltage diode or capacitor failed
  • Fuse blown, often because a door switch has failed
  • High-voltage transformer failed
  • Relay or fault on the control board, so the high-voltage circuit never switches on
  • A thermal cut-out has tripped, often from blocked vents

What the technician does

  1. Make safeUnplugs the oven, opens it, and discharges the high-voltage capacitor.
  2. TestChecks the fuse, door switches, diode, capacitor, transformer and magnetron with a meter.
  3. QuoteTells you which part has failed and the price before any work.
  4. Repair and checkFits the part, closes the cover, tests heating with water, and checks that the door latches properly.

Questions

Is it worth replacing the magnetron?

It depends on the age of the oven and the cost of the part compared with a new oven. The technician tells you the price first, so you can decide. See our spare parts prices for an idea.

Why does my microwave spark inside?

Usually from metal in the oven, food stuck to the walls, or a burnt waveguide cover. That is the small sheet on the inside wall, often made of mica, that covers the opening the microwaves come through. Stop using it and book a check, because sparking can damage the magnetron.

It heats, but much slower than before. Is that the same fault?

It can be an ageing magnetron, or low supply voltage at your socket. The technician checks both.
