Does a fridge need regular gas refilling?
No. The gas in a fridge runs in a sealed loop and does not get used up. If a fridge needs gas, it has a leak. A proper job finds and repairs the leak, vacuums the system, and then charges the same type of gas the fridge was built for, by weight or pressure.

Signs the gas may be low
These signs can also come from a blocked capillary tube, a defrost fault or a weak compressor. That is why the technician checks before charging gas, and does not charge gas just because the fridge is warm.
- The compressor runs for a long time but the fridge stays only slightly cool
- Frost forms on only part of the evaporator or freezer wall
- The condenser at the back stays cool while the compressor runs
- An oily mark near a pipe joint, which can show where gas escaped
Which gas your fridge uses
Most newer fridges sold in India use R600a, a hydrocarbon gas. Many older fridges use R134a. The gas type is printed on the rating label, usually inside the fridge or at the back. The two gases are not interchangeable. The technician charges the gas named on the label.
R600a is flammable, so the technician works with the fridge unplugged, the room aired, and no flame near the open system except the controlled brazing at the joint.

When a leak is hard to reach
In many fridges the evaporator or condenser pipes run inside the foam walls. A leak there cannot be reached without cutting into the body. In that case the technician may suggest running a new pipe outside the wall, and will tell you the cost and how it will look before going ahead.
Questions
How do I know if my fridge has R600a or R134a?
Look for the rating label inside the fridge part or at the back. It names the refrigerant and often its weight in grams.
Is a gas refill worth it on an old fridge?
If the compressor is healthy and the leak is reachable, it is often worth it. If the compressor is weak too, compare the cost with a new fridge. See repair or replace.
Can you top up the gas without repairing the leak?
We do not recommend it. The new gas escapes through the same leak, and you pay again.
