Refrigerator repair

Refrigerator not cooling

If your fridge feels warm, or the freezer is cold but the lower part is not, a few checks rule out the simple causes. If those do not help, a technician finds the fault at your home in Kolkata.

Why is my fridge not cooling?

Simple causes are a wrong temperature setting, a door that does not seal, food blocking the air vents, and dust on the condenser at the back. In frost-free fridges, a common fault is ice blocking the air path because the defrost heater, timer or sensor has failed. If the compressor does not start at all, the relay, overload protector or compressor itself may be at fault, and low gas from a leak also stops cooling.

What you can safely check first

  1. SettingCheck the temperature knob or display. A setting changed by mistake, or a holiday or eco mode, can make the fridge warm.
  2. Door sealClose the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out easily, the gasket is not sealing at that point. Also check the fridge is not tilting forward, which stops the door closing by itself.
  3. Air ventsIn frost-free fridges, cold air comes from the freezer through vents. Move food that is pressed against the vents at the back.
  4. Back and sidesLeave a gap between the fridge and the wall, and clean dust off the condenser coil at the back if it is exposed. Unplug the fridge first.
  5. SoundListen for the compressor, the low hum from the black unit at the bottom back. If it clicks on and off every few minutes without running, switch the fridge off and book a check.

Common causes we find

  • Defrost heater, defrost timer, sensor or bimetal fault in a frost-free fridge, so ice chokes the evaporator
  • Freezer fan motor not running, so cold air does not reach the lower part
  • Thermostat or temperature sensor fault
  • Relay or overload protector (OLP) failure, so the compressor does not start
  • Gas leak, often at a brazed joint or in the condenser or evaporator
  • Door gasket torn or hard with age
  • Control or inverter board fault in newer models
  • Compressor fault, checked last

What the technician does

The technician checks the supply voltage, whether the compressor starts and how much current it draws, and whether the condenser at the back is getting warm. In a frost-free fridge they look at the evaporator behind the freezer panel for ice and test the defrost parts and fan. Once the fault is clear, you hear what the repair costs before any work starts.

If the gas is low, see refrigerator gas refill. If the compressor itself has failed, see compressor repair.

Questions

The freezer is cold but the fridge part is warm. What does that mean?

In a frost-free fridge, this usually means the cold air is not moving down from the freezer. The cause is often ice blocking the evaporator because of a defrost fault, or a freezer fan that has stopped.

What temperature should a fridge be?

About 3°C to 5°C in the fridge part and about -18°C in the freezer. See our guide on fridge temperature setting.

Should I switch it off until the technician comes?

If the compressor is clicking on and off, or there is a burning smell, yes. Otherwise you can leave it on, keep the door shut and move food that spoils fast elsewhere.
