What happens during an RO filter change?
The technician tests the input and output water with a TDS meter, opens the purifier and checks each filter. The ones that are due are replaced, usually the sediment and carbon filters, and the RO membrane when its output has dropped. The new filters are flushed, the fittings checked for leaks, and the water and flow tested again.

The filters in a typical RO purifier
- Sediment filter: catches sand, rust and dirt. It is usually the first to clog
- Pre-carbon filter: removes chlorine and smells, and protects the membrane
- RO membrane: removes dissolved salts. It is the main part of the purifier
- Post-carbon filter: improves the taste of the stored water
- UV lamp or UF membrane on many models, for germs
- Mineral cartridge or TDS controller on some models
Signs the filters are due
How often depends on your water and how much you use. Many makers suggest changing the pre-filters every six to twelve months, and the membrane less often. Our guide on how often to change an RO filter explains more.
- Water flow is slow, or the tank takes much longer to fill
- The water tastes or smells different
- The TDS of the purified water has gone up
- The pump runs for longer than before
- A filter-change light or alert is on
What you can safely check first
- Check the inlet valve on the water line is open and water is coming in
- Check the purifier is switched on at the socket
- Look for bent or pinched pipes behind the unit
- Do not open the filter housings unless your manual shows how. The system is under water pressure

Questions
Which filters do you fit?
Filters that match your purifier model. If you want a particular make, tell us when you book, and the technician will say what is available before fitting anything.
Why does the water look cloudy after a filter change?
New filters hold air, and the first water can look milky or taste of carbon. The technician flushes the filters before leaving. Fine bubbles clear on their own once the water stands.
Can a filter change be part of an AMC?
Ask about it on the call. See our annual maintenance contract page for what the plans cover.
