What is needed to wall mount a TV?

A bracket that matches the screw pattern on the back of your TV, called the VESA pattern, and is rated for its weight. You also need a solid wall and a power socket near the spot. The technician checks the wall for hidden wiring and pipes, fixes the bracket level, mounts the TV and tidies the cables.

What the visit covers

Many new TVs come with a wall bracket in the box, and the brand or the seller may offer installation. Check that first. If you have already used it, or bought the TV elsewhere, book us.

  • Checking the wall type and looking for wires and pipes before drilling
  • Marking the height with you and fixing the bracket level
  • Mounting the TV and checking it sits firm
  • Connecting the set top box, soundbar or other devices
  • Tidying the cables along the wall
  • Taking down and refitting a TV when you move

Choosing the spot and height

  • Keep the centre of the screen near eye level when you are seated
  • Avoid a wall facing a window, where sunlight causes glare
  • Keep the TV away from the gas stove, heaters and damp walls
  • Leave a gap behind and round the TV for air, so it does not run hot
  • Plan where the set top box, router and socket will sit before drilling

Walls and brackets

Brick and concrete walls hold a bracket well. Hollow partitions, plywood panels and walls with a thick false finish need a different fixing, so tell us when you book.

Fixed brackets hold the TV flat to the wall. Tilting brackets angle it down a little. Swivel or full-motion brackets let you pull the TV out and turn it, and they put more load on the wall, so they need a strong one.

Before the technician arrives

  • Keep the bracket and the screws that came with the TV
  • Clear the space in front of the wall
  • If you know where wires run inside the wall, tell the technician

Questions

Do you bring the bracket?

Tell us when you book whether you have a bracket. If you do not, give us the TV model on the call, so we can tell you about one that fits.

Can the cables be hidden?

The usual way is a cable channel fixed along the wall. Running cables inside the wall needs cutting and plaster work, which is a bigger job, so ask about it on the call.

Will drilling damage my wiring?

The technician checks for wires and pipes before drilling and avoids the lines running straight up and down from switches and sockets, which is where house wiring usually runs.
