The TV has sound but no picture, or stays black. A few checks can rule out the simple causes. If they do not help, our technician finds the faulty part in Kolkata.

Why does my LED TV have sound but no picture?
Most often the backlight has failed, so the picture is there but too dark to see. Other causes are a faulty T-con board, a power supply fault, a loose panel cable or a damaged panel. Shine a torch close to the screen while the TV is on. If you can faintly see the picture, it is the backlight.

Work out which kind of no display it is
- No sound, no picture, and the standby light is off: the power supply, or no power reaching the TV
- Standby light is on but the TV does not start: the remote, the main board or the power supply
- Sound but a black screen: the backlight, the T-con board or the panel cable
- The brand logo shows, then the screen goes black: often the backlight or the power supply
- The TV menu shows but there is no channel picture: the input setting, the cable or the set top box, not the TV
What you can safely check first
Please do not open the back of the TV. The power board holds a charge for some time after unplugging, and the panel cracks easily.
- PowerCheck the socket with another appliance, and plug the TV in directly without the extension board.
- ButtonPress the power button on the TV itself, in case the remote is the problem.
- MenuPress Menu or Home. If the menu appears, the screen works, so check the input source and the HDMI cable.
- ResetSwitch off at the socket for a few minutes, then switch on again.
- Torch testWith the TV on, shine a torch at the screen from close. A faint picture means the backlight has failed.

Questions
My screen is cracked. Can it be repaired?
A cracked panel cannot be repaired, only replaced. A new panel often costs a large part of the price of a new TV, so the technician gives you the price and lets you decide.
Can a power cut or a voltage spike cause this?
Yes. Surges can damage the power supply board. A good spike guard helps protect the TV. Our guide on whether you need a stabiliser explains more.
My TV is under the brand's warranty. Should I book?
Check with the brand's own service first, because a warranty repair may be free. For most TV brands we are an independent repairer.
