Is an annual maintenance contract worth it?
An AMC is usually worth it when you have several ACs or appliances, use them heavily, or run an office or shop where a breakdown costs you business. For one AC used a few months a year, paying for a service when you need it may cost about the same. Before signing, read what the contract covers: the number of visits, breakdown calls, labour and which parts are included.
What an AMC normally includes
- A set number of service visits in the year, on a schedule
- Cleaning and checks on each appliance at those visits
- Breakdown visits during the contract
- Labour for repairs during the contract
- Parts, either charged separately or covered from a listed set, depending on the type of contract
Comprehensive and non-comprehensive
A non-comprehensive AMC, sometimes called a labour or service contract, covers the visits and the labour. Parts are charged when they are needed, often at a reduced rate.
A comprehensive AMC also covers a listed set of parts, such as motors, boards or the compressor, and costs more. Even then, contracts commonly leave out the cabinet, plastic parts, filters and the remote. Read the list, not the name.
Questions to ask before you sign
- How many service visits, and in which months
- Are breakdown calls included, and how many
- Which parts are covered, and which are not
- Is gas charging after a leak repair included
- What happens if an appliance cannot be repaired
- Does the contract renew on its own, and how do you end it
When it makes sense, and when it does not
It tends to pay off for a home with three or more ACs, a family that uses the AC most of the year, or an office, clinic or shop. It also takes away the job of remembering when each unit is due.
It makes less sense for an appliance still under the maker's warranty, where covered repairs are free, or for a very old unit that may be better replaced. See repair or replace.

Questions
Does an AMC replace the maker's warranty?
No. While an appliance is under the maker's warranty, covered faults are repaired by the brand's authorised service, usually free. An AMC is most useful once the warranty ends.
Can I get an AMC for an old AC?
Usually yes, after an inspection. The technician checks the unit first, because a contract on an AC that needs a major repair would not be fair to either side.
Does an AMC cover a gas refill?
It depends on the contract. Ask before signing, and check whether the leak repair is included as well as the gas.
