How often should I get my AC serviced?
For most homes, a full service once a year before summer is the minimum, and twice a year if the AC runs most days for many months. Between services, clean the air filter about every two weeks while the AC is in heavy use, as AC makers advise in their manuals. A dusty location, a busy road or pets in the room mean more frequent service.
What decides how often
- Hours of use. An AC that runs every night from March to October needs more care than one used on the hottest days only.
- Dust. Flats near a main road, a building site or on a low floor fill the filter and coil faster.
- Where the outdoor unit sits. A unit in a closed balcony or a cramped spot breathes its own hot air and collects dirt on its coil.
- What happens in the room. Cooking smoke, cigarette smoke and pet hair all end up in the indoor coil.
- Age. Older ACs drift out of shape faster and are worth checking more often.
A filter clean is not a service
The air filter is the mesh behind the front panel of the indoor unit. You can clean it yourself. Switch the AC off, lift the panel, slide the filter out, wash it in plain water, let it dry in the shade and put it back.
A full service goes further. The technician cleans the indoor coil and the blower, washes the outdoor coil, clears the drain pipe, checks the electrical connections and reads the gas pressure. This needs a water jet, covers and tools, so it is not a job for a home owner.
Signs your AC needs a service now
- It takes longer to cool the room than it did last year
- Water drips from the indoor unit
- A musty smell when it starts
- New rattling, humming or clicking noises
- Frost or ice on the pipes
- A higher electricity bill for the same use

Is one service a year enough in Kolkata?
For an AC used a few hours a night in the summer months, one service before summer is usually enough. For an AC that runs from March to October, or one in a shop or office, two services work better: one before summer and one after the monsoon.
Does servicing lower the electricity bill?
A dirty filter and coil make the compressor run longer for the same cooling. Cleaning them restores the airflow, so the AC reaches the set temperature sooner. How much you save depends on how dirty it was.
Does an AC service include a gas refill?
No. A service checks the gas pressure. An AC does not use up its gas, so low gas means a leak. Finding and fixing the leak and charging the gas is a separate job, quoted before work.
Does a new AC need servicing in its first year?
Clean the filters from the first month. If the AC is under the maker's warranty, check whether the warranty card includes free service visits before you book anyone else.
