What usually goes wrong with a front load washing machine?
The common faults are a blocked drain filter, a torn or dirty door gasket that leaks, a door lock that will not engage or release, and worn drum bearings that rumble loudly in spin. Many of these are fixed at home. The technician checks the machine first and gives you the price before starting.

Faults we fix on front loaders
- Door will not lock, so the program will not start

- Water on the floor from the door gasket, the drain filter cap or a hose
- Water left in the drum because the drain filter or drain pump is blocked
- Loud rumbling or banging in spin, from the drum bearings or the shock absorbers
- Water not heating on hot programs, from a failed heater or its temperature sensor
- Drum turning slowly or not at all, from the motor, the belt on belt-driven models, or the control board
What you can safely check first
A front loader keeps its door locked while there is water inside or the drum is still turning. If the door is stuck after a wash, run a drain or spin-only program, then wait a few minutes before you try the handle. Do not pull the door hard, because the latch breaks easily.
- Switch off and unplug the machine before you touch anything inside
- Check that the water tap is fully open and the inlet hose is not bent behind the machine
- Clean the drain filter behind the small flap at the bottom front. Put a low tray and old towels down first, because water will come out
- Look inside the folds of the door gasket for coins, hair clips, or a torn spot
- If the machine was just moved or installed, check that the transit bolts at the back were taken out. Running with them in makes the machine shake violently

Questions
Can worn drum bearings be replaced?
On many front loaders, yes, by taking the drum out of the tub. Some newer models have a sealed tub, where the bearings come only with a new tub, and that costs more. The technician tells you which kind yours is before starting.
Why does my front load machine smell?
Water and detergent left in the gasket, the drawer and the drain filter grow mould. Leave the door and the drawer open a little after each wash. Our guide on washing machine smell has the full cleaning steps.
My machine is under the maker's warranty. Should I book?
Check with the brand's own service first, because a warranty repair may be free. For most brands we are an independent repairer. For LG, we run the authorised service centre at Dostipur, Diamond Harbour.
