Why is my washing machine not draining?
The usual causes are a blocked drain filter or pump, a bent or blocked drain hose, a hose end pushed too deep into the outlet, or a failed drain pump or drain valve. Coins, hair clips and lint are the most common blockage. Clean the filter and check the hose first. If the water still stays, the pump or valve needs a technician.

Common causes by machine type
- Front load: a blocked drain filter or drain pump. Small items from pockets collect here
- Top load: a blocked hose, a failed drain pump, or a stuck drain valve, depending on the model
- Semi-automatic: the selector knob not on drain, a stuck drain valve, or a blocked hose
- Any machine: the hose bent behind the machine, crushed against the wall, or clogged with lint at the end
- Machines that drain by gravity, without a pump, need the hose to run down to a floor drain. If the hose goes up, the water will not leave
What you can safely check first
Do not tilt a front loader full of water or force its door open. The drum may hold a lot of water and it will flood the floor.
- Switch offTurn the machine off and pull the plug before touching the filter or hose.
- Check the hosePull the machine out a little. Straighten any bend and check the hose end for lint.
- Check the outletThe hose end should sit loosely in the drain, not pushed deep or sealed in with tape.
- Clean the filterOn front loaders and some top loaders, open the filter at the bottom front over a tray and towels, and clear it.
- Try againPlug in and run a drain or spin-only program.
What the technician does
- Listens to the pump. A hum with no water moving points to a blockage. Silence points to the pump, its wiring or the control board
- Opens the pump housing and clears anything stuck in it
- Replaces the drain pump, or the drain valve and its motor on gravity-drain models
- Replaces a cracked or hardened drain hose
- Runs a drain and spin to check the water leaves fully and nothing leaks
Questions
Why does the machine stop with water still inside?
Machines do not spin until the water has drained. If draining takes too long, the program stops or shows an error, to protect the motor. Clearing the drain usually lets it finish normally.
Can too much detergent cause this?
It can look like it. Too much detergent, or hand-wash powder in an automatic machine, makes heavy foam. Some machines pause to clear the foam, which looks like a drain fault. Use detergent made for your type of machine.
