What happens during a split AC installation?
The technician fixes the indoor unit's mounting plate on the wall, drills a hole for the pipes, and places the outdoor unit on a stand or a flat base. Then the copper pipes, drain pipe and cable are connected, the pipes are vacuumed to remove air and moisture, the gas valves are opened and the cooling is tested. A window AC needs a correctly sized opening and firm support, with no pipework.
The steps for a split AC
- PlanThe technician agrees the indoor and outdoor positions with you, and the route for the pipes and drain.
- Indoor unitThe mounting plate is fixed level on the wall, and a hole is drilled through the wall for the pipes, drain and cable.
- Outdoor unitThe outdoor unit goes on a wall stand or a flat base, with space around it for air.
- ConnectThe copper pipes are flared and joined, the drain pipe is laid with a downward slope, and the cable is wired.
- VacuumA vacuum pump draws air and moisture out of the pipes and the indoor coil.
- Open and testThe gas valves on the outdoor unit are opened, joints are checked for leaks, and the AC is run to check cooling and drainage.
Why vacuuming matters
The new pipes and indoor coil are full of ordinary air, which carries moisture. Left inside, it upsets the pressures, cuts the cooling and can damage the compressor oil and parts over time. Vacuuming removes it before the gas is let in.
Ask the technician to use a vacuum pump. Pushing air out with the AC's own gas is a shortcut to avoid.
Before the technician arrives
- Decide where you want the indoor unit, away from direct sun and with space above it
- Make sure there is a suitable power point with earthing near the indoor unit
- Clear the wall and the floor below it
- Check access to the outside wall, balcony or roof for the outdoor unit
- Get your society's permission if the outdoor unit goes on an outer wall
What may cost extra
Extra copper pipe beyond the length in the kit, a wall stand, a longer drain pipe, core cutting through a thick wall and new wiring are often charged separately. Ask for these before the work starts, so the bill holds no surprise.

Questions
Can I install a split AC myself?
It is not a good idea. It needs a vacuum pump, a flaring tool, the right torque on the joints and safe wiring. Mistakes lead to gas leaks and poor cooling.
Is installation included when I buy a new AC?
Some brands and shops include a basic installation with a new AC. Check your purchase bill, and ask what the free installation leaves out.
How is an AC moved to a new flat?
The technician first pumps the gas into the outdoor unit and closes its valves, then removes both units and the pipes. At the new place it is installed like a new AC, with vacuuming. Ask on the call if you need this.
