What usually goes wrong with a window AC?
Common window AC faults are weak cooling from a clogged coil or low gas, water dripping into the room because the unit has lost its outward tilt or the drain is blocked, loud noise from a loose fan or worn mounts, and the compressor not starting because of a failed capacitor or relay. Most of these are repaired at home.

How a window AC differs from a split
Everything in a window AC sits in one box. The cooling coil faces the room and the hot coil faces outside, with one motor driving both fans. Because the compressor is in the same box, a window AC is usually louder than a split, but it has no long pipes to leak and is simpler to work on.
The box must tilt slightly towards the outside. Water from the cooling coil runs to the back and drips out. If the unit sits level or tilts into the room, that water comes inside.
What you can safely check first
- Pull out the front filter and wash it if it is dusty
- Check the mode is Cool and the temperature is set below the room
- Look at the back of the unit outside and clear anything blocking it
- If water comes into the room, check whether the unit has dropped to level or tilts inwards
- If it trips the power or smells of burning, switch it off and leave it off

What the technician does
The technician opens the front panel and checks the capacitor, fan motor, compressor current and controls. For gas leaks, coil cleaning or some fan faults, the unit may need to come out of its frame. They tell you before doing that, and you hear the fault and the price before any work starts.

Is it worth repairing an old window AC?

My window AC is very noisy. Is that normal?
