What goes wrong most in a semi-automatic washing machine?
Most faults are in the parts that work hardest: the wash motor with its belt and capacitor, the spin motor and spin brake, the timers, and the drain valve. A wash tub that hums but does not turn usually points to the capacitor or the belt. Leaks under the machine usually come from the drain valve or the drain hose.

How a semi-automatic machine works
It has two tubs. The wash tub has a pulsator driven by its own motor, set by the wash timer. The spin tub has a second motor, set by the spin timer, and a brake that stops it when you lift the lid. You fill the water and move the clothes by hand. A selector knob opens the drain valve to empty the wash tub.
Because each tub has its own motor and timer, one side can fail while the other still works. That helps the technician find the fault quickly.
Faults we fix
- Wash tub hums but the pulsator does not turn, from the capacitor, the belt or the motor
- Spin tub does not turn or turns slowly, from the spin motor, its capacitor, the brake or the lid switch
- Water leaking under the machine, from the drain valve seal, the drain hose or a cracked tub
- Water does not drain, from the selector knob, the drain valve or a blocked hose
- Timer knob turns but nothing happens
- Loud noise from the spin tub, from an uneven load or a loose or worn part
What you can safely check first
- Check the selector knob. The wash tub only drains when it is set to drain
- Close the spin lid fully and press the spin cap down on the clothes. Many machines will not spin with the lid open
- Put fewer clothes in the spin tub and spread them evenly
- Check the plug and socket with another appliance
- Keep the plug dry and use an earthed socket. These machines often stand on a wet bathroom floor
What the technician does
- TestRuns each tub on its own and tests the motors, capacitors and timers with a meter.
- QuoteTells you what has failed and the price before any work.
- RepairReplaces the capacitor, belt, brake, drain valve, timer or motor as needed.
- CheckRuns a wash, a drain and a spin, and checks for leaks and earthing.
Questions
My machine gives a mild shock when I touch it. What should I do?
Switch it off at the socket and do not use it. A shock means current is leaking to the body, often from wet wiring or a missing earth connection. Book a visit and mention the shock, so the technician checks the wiring and the earth first.
Can you replace just the spin motor?
Yes. The wash and spin sides have separate motors, so one can be replaced without touching the other.
