AC service and repair

AC not cooling

If your AC runs but the room stays warm, a few checks can rule out the simple causes. If those do not fix it, a technician finds the fault at your home in Kolkata.

  • Visit charge: told to you on the call, before we visit
  • Warranty: 90 days on the work done

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The most common causes are dirty filters or coils, the wrong mode on the remote, an outdoor unit that is not running, and low gas from a leak. If the indoor fan blows but the outdoor unit is silent, the fault is often a failed capacitor, a tripped supply or a control board problem. Clean the filters and check the settings first, then book a technician if it still does not cool.

What you can safely check first

  1. Mode and temperatureSet the remote to Cool, not Fan, Dry or Auto, and set a temperature lower than the room. If the remote battery is weak, the AC may not get the command.
  2. FiltersSwitch the AC off, open the front panel and look at the filters. If they are grey with dust, wash them in plain water and dry them fully before putting them back.
  3. Outdoor unitWith the AC on, see if the outdoor fan is turning and you hear the compressor. If it is silent, check the MCB or switch that feeds the AC.
  4. Airflow outsideClear anything that blocks the outdoor unit, such as boxes, cloth covers or plants. It needs open space to throw out heat.
  5. RoomClose windows and doors, and draw curtains on a sunny wall. An AC that is too small for the room will struggle on the hottest afternoons.

Common causes we find

  • Dirty indoor or outdoor coil that cannot pass heat
  • Low gas because of a leak at a joint, valve or coil
  • Failed run capacitor, so the compressor or outdoor fan does not start
  • Outdoor fan motor not turning
  • Faulty temperature sensor or control board
  • Compressor fault, which is less common and is checked last
  • Low or unstable voltage, which can stop the outdoor unit

What the technician does

The technician checks the supply voltage and the current the AC draws, listens to the outdoor unit, and measures the gas pressure with a gauge. They test the capacitor, fan motor and sensors, and look at the coils. Once the fault is found, you hear what the repair costs before any work starts.

If the AC simply needs cleaning, an AC service often brings the cooling back. If the gas is low, the leak is repaired before a gas refill, so the new gas stays in.

Questions

Should I keep running an AC that is not cooling?

Not for long. If the outdoor unit is struggling or the pipes are icing up, running it can make the fault worse. Switch it off and book a check.

Is ice on the pipes a sign of low gas?

It can be. Ice also forms when the filters or indoor coil are very dirty and air cannot flow over the coil. Clean the filters first. If ice still forms, the technician checks the gas.

What temperature should I set?

New ACs sold in India come set to 24°C by default under BEE rules. Around 24°C to 26°C is comfortable for most rooms and saves power. See AC temperature to save electricity.
