Why is water leaking from my AC indoor unit?
An AC takes moisture out of the room air, and that water collects in a tray under the indoor coil and runs out through a drain pipe. If the pipe or tray is blocked with dust and slime, or the pipe has lost its downward slope, the water overflows into the room. Dirty filters that let the coil freeze and then melt also cause dripping.

What you can safely check first
- Switch offTurn the AC off at the remote and the switch, and put a towel or bucket under the unit.
- FiltersWash dusty filters in plain water. Very dirty filters cut the airflow, the coil turns icy, and the melting ice overflows the tray.
- Drain pipe outsideFind where the drain pipe ends, outside or in a bathroom. If no water comes out while the AC runs, the pipe may be blocked or crushed.
- Pipe routeLook for a section of pipe that sags, rises or has a kink. Water cannot run uphill.
- Indoor unit levelIf the unit looks tilted away from the drain side, the water collects on the wrong end of the tray.
Common causes we find
- Drain pipe blocked by dust, slime or insects
- Drain tray dirty or cracked
- Drain pipe sagging, rising or kinked along its route
- Indoor unit not level on its bracket
- Coil freezing from dirty filters or low gas, then melting
- Poor insulation on the copper pipes, which then sweat and drip near the wall
What the technician does
The technician flushes the drain tray and pipe, clears the blockage, and checks that water flows out freely. They straighten or re-lay the drain pipe if its route is wrong, and level the indoor unit if needed. If the coil was freezing, they check the airflow and the gas pressure.
Often an AC service fixes a leak, because the drain is flushed as part of the cleaning. If the problem is the pipe route or low gas, you hear the price for that repair before any work.
Questions
Is water from the AC dangerous?
The water itself is just condensed moisture. The risk is water reaching wiring, sockets or the floor where someone can slip. Switch the AC off and keep the area dry until it is fixed.
Why does it only leak on humid days?
On humid days the AC pulls much more water out of the air. A partly blocked drain can cope on a dry day and overflow on a wet one.
Water is dripping from the outdoor unit. Is that a fault?
Usually not. Some water from the outdoor unit or the end of the drain pipe outside is normal while the AC cools.
