How do I get my AC ready for summer?
Before the first hot week, clean the air filters, check the remote batteries, clear leaves, nests and stored things from around the outdoor unit, and run the AC in cool mode for 15 to 20 minutes. Check that it cools, that water drains outside and that it sounds normal. If it cools weakly, smells, drips indoors or trips the MCB, book a service before you need it daily.
A check you can do yourself
- LookCheck the plug, socket and wire for damage. Rats and birds sometimes chew wires over winter.
- FiltersTake out the filters, wash them in plain water, dry them in the shade and refit them.
- Outdoor unitRemove any cover, clear leaves, nests and stored boxes, and make sure air can flow in and out freely.
- RemoteFit new batteries and check the display.
- Test runRun it in cool mode at 24°C for 15 to 20 minutes with doors shut, and feel the air from the vents.
- DrainCheck that water drips from the drain pipe outside, not from the indoor unit.
What to leave to a technician
- Cleaning the indoor coil and blower with a water jet
- Washing the outdoor coil
- Clearing a blocked drain pipe
- Checking the gas pressure and electrical connections
- Any burning smell, sparking or tripping
Signs to book a service early
- The air from the vents is only slightly cool after 20 minutes
- A musty or burning smell
- Water on the wall or floor under the indoor unit
- Grinding, rattling or loud clicking
- The outdoor fan does not spin, or the outdoor unit stays silent

Questions
Is it safe to switch on an AC that has not run for months?
Usually yes, after you check the plug, socket and wire for damage. If you see chewed wires or smell burning, switch it off at the MCB and call a technician.
Should I cover the outdoor unit in winter?
A cover can keep leaves and dirt out while the AC is off. Remove it before you run the AC, because a covered unit cannot throw out heat.
When is the right month for a pre-summer service?
Before you start using the AC every day, often February or early March in Kolkata. A second service after the monsoon helps if the AC runs for many months.
